Good news!! I finally finished recording the new song! It took me about 3 months to write and record it. That’s not a long time, but it just seems longer to me I guess. After I write a song, I practice it literally hundreds of times. Sometimes I change a little bit here and there, but mostly it stays the same without any edits. (To read more about the creative process of one of my songs, click here).
This song, called Angel, is 4:55 minutes long, which is the longest song I’ve ever written. I actually had more I wanted to put into this song, but I had to cut it down because my recording software can only record a song that’s 5:00 minutes or less. There’s other software out there, but I really don’t know too much about the technical side of music after a song is written. It has to go through the mastering process, and is basically just fixed up so it sounds clearer and any technical imperfections are cleared up.
I do not master my own songs. This is a whole other skill in itself, and basically I don’t know how to do this. There’s obviously lots of companies or people you can choose to do this for you if you’re a musician. Just want to give a shout out to Ethos Audio Mastering for mastering my songs for me! You do a great job and I’m always happy with how my songs turn out!
Here is a pic of how the song looked while I was recording it. I use the PreSonus AudioBox USB 2×2 USB Recording Interface
but there’s lots of other recording software and equipment out there.
One of my favorite things is actually hearing my songs for the first time from the media player. Even though the songs not mastered yet, to me it’s just cool because it’s the first time I’m hearing the song from the speakers, and not the headphones. The headphones are necessary for recording, but when I’m just listening to my music it’s better from speakers. Here is a pic from the first time I listened to Angel from the media player.
Once the songs in the media player, I listen to it many times for any mistakes or technical imperfections. Usually there’s not any musical mistakes. Not because I play perfect, but because when I record it, I am a perfectionist, and re-record the same things many times until it’s as close to perfect as I can get. Then I send it out to get mastered and that’s it! It can take up to a week or so to get back, but then it’s all finished.
My new song, Angel, will be released next month. More info to follow.
Thanks again to those of you who keep up with my music and this blog. I’ll never be able to express how much it means to me that you take the time to listen my songs. Thank you 🙂
